In September 2002, Anthony and Kurt were selected to commission Naval Special Clearance Team ONE, the Navy's only command dedicated full-time to hunting sea mines with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), dolphins, and combat divers. Six months later they deployed to Iraq to clear the ports of Umm Qasr and Az Zubayr during the initial phase of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Using AUVs with side scan sonar as the primary method of searching the harbor for mines, they declared the harbor safe for shipping in minimum time. Today they are applying the technology and their extensive operational experience to make major U.S. ports better prepared for underwater threats to security.
